Cyber Warning from Dragos: DER and Microgrids Are Now in the Threat Landscape
The advanced communication and control software which make microgrids so integral in connection to both the main grid and the on-site load also makes them vulnerable to bad actors from global cyber wilderness.
A recent blog from analyst Scott Bear at cybersecurity firm Dragos warned about the malware, botnets and other cyber thiefs throughout the internet making targets of interconnected distributed energy and microgrid assets. Those ransomware operators can try to infiltrate data systems within companies of every variety, from manufacturers to hospitals and utility providers.
Systems closer to the edge of the grid are no less immune to malicious cyber activity. Bear’s blog runs down the expanse of the threat vector to microgrids and DERs.
