Strategic Merger Boosts Solar, Microgrid, and Storage Solutions for Western Canada
Western Canadian solar firm SkyFire Energy is acquiring British Columbia-based renewable developer Hakai Energy Solutions to broaden the merged companies’ array of solar microgrid, off-grid solar and battery storage offerings.
Calgary-based SkyFire Energy’s strategy for adding Hakai Energy is to further expand expertise in residential solar and storage, commercial and industrial energy, large-scale off-grid and remote systems including microgrids and community energy projects. The two companies now jointly offer engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and operations and maintenance (O&M) services in the renewable energy sector of British Columbia and throughout western Canada.
The focus of Hakai Energy mostly has been on off-grid distributed energy and microgrids, while SkyFire is also known for EPC and O&M services.
“Hakai Energy Solutions has long been an admired leader in western Canada,” SkyFire Energy CEO David Voensch said in a statement. “Their expertise in remote off-grid and microgrid systems perfectly complements SkyFire’s strengths across residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale solar. Together, we are building energy for good.”
The combination creates a larger portfolio of solar, battery energy, microgrid and off-grid alternatives for companies locating in western Canada.

In early 2025, SkyFire Energy achieved a 2-GW milestone in its utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system O&M portfolio. The company has installed solar and storage for such entities as Canadian Blood Services in Calgary, Cool Dental in Alberta, the Calgary Child Development Centre, as well as projects for indigenous customers such as Cowessess Ventures, Tsuut’ina Adult Education Centre, and NGCI Sundancer in Maskwacis, Alberta.
The merger with SkyFire also creates a combined workforce of close to 200 employees.
