Data Center Bond: PowerSecure, Edged Strengthen On-Site Power Collaboration

June 5, 2025
So far, PowerSecure has supplied 152 MW of critical load capacity to Edged data centers, including sites in Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Des Moines, Iowa, Kansas City and Phoenix.

Microgrid developer PowerSecure is reaffirming its alliance with data center developer Edged to supply on-site electric distribution for the latter’s facilities across the U.S.

PowerSecure, which is a subsidiary of the Atlanta-based utility holding company Southern Co., and Edged have previously collaborated but are extending that partnership. The first PowerSecure work for Edged came with a project at the data center firm’s Atlanta campus in August 2024.

So far, PowerSecure has supplied 152 MW of critical load capacity to other Edged data centers, including sites in Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Des Moines, Iowa, Kansas City and Phoenix.

"We are proud to work with Edged in delivering customized, resilient power solutions that support the next generation of data centers," said Jim Smith, president of PowerSecure, in a statement. "This alliance reflects the strength of our team and our shared commitment to innovation, sustainability and reliability in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. PowerSecure is proud to be a key player in addressing these challenges, delivering reliability and resilience upon which our communities and customers have come to depend."

PowerSecure provides EPA-certified Tier 4 Final PowerBlock diesel gensets and infrastructure to support on-site and backup power demand for the data centers. Tier 4 is a set of federal emissions standards for off-highway diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter from combustion exhaust.

Overall, electricity load from artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud-based capacity are expected to perhaps double by 2032, at least adding 30 GW in the next few years, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs. Edged has unveiled at least four new data centers in the U.S. just since January.

"Working with PowerSecure has allowed us to provide ultra‑clean, reliable power for our rapidly expanding platform of sustainable data centers," said Mitch Fonseca, chief operating officer at Edged.

"Their expertise in advanced power solutions helps ensure that each facility maintains the highest standards for uptime and efficiency. Every Edged facility is purpose‑built for high‑performance compute and AI inference, delivering unmatched efficiency in both energy and water usage," Fonseca added. "Together, we're creating the resilient, scalable infrastructure needed to power the innovations of tomorrow."

Edged is owned by Connecticut-based parent Endeavour, a global logistics and cloud provider. In addition to Edged, Endeavour owns cooling system firm ThermalWorks.

PowerSecure has developed numerous microgrid and on-site backup power projects for multiple sectors of industrial and commercial customers. One of the latest was Final PowerBlock gen-sets to support the PGA Tour Studio in Ponte Vedra, Florida.

In a recent video Quickchat interview with EnergyTech—a sister brand of Microgrid Knowledge—PowerSecure’s Todd Jackson focused on the value proposition behind standby energy resources for large-load customers such as data centers and industrial sites. Advanced control systems and coordination are key in reshaping the grid on a distribution level, said Jackson, who is vice president of development for PowerSecure.

I’ve spent the last 15 years covering the energy industry as a newspaper and trade journalist. I was an energy writer and business editor at the Tulsa World before moving to business-to-business media at PennWell Publishing, which later became Clarion Events, where I covered the electric power industry. I joined Endeavor Business Media in November 2021 to help launch EnergyTech, one of the company’s newest media brands. I joined Microgrid Knowledge in July 2023.

I earned my Bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma. My career stops include the Moore American, Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise, Wagoner Tribune and Tulsa World, all in Oklahoma . I have been married to Laura for the past 33-plus years and we have four children and one adorable granddaughter. We want the energy transition to make their lives better in the future.

Microgrid Knowledge and EnergyTech are focused on the mission critical and large-scale energy users and their sustainability and resiliency goals. These include the commercial and industrial sectors, as well as the military, universities, data centers and microgrids. The C&I sectors together account for close to 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

Many large-scale energy users such as Fortune 500 companies, and mission-critical users such as military bases, universities, healthcare facilities, public safety and data centers, shifting their energy priorities to reach net-zero carbon goals within the coming decades. These include plans for renewable energy power purchase agreements, but also on-site resiliency projects such as microgrids, combined heat and power, rooftop solar, energy storage, digitalization and building efficiency upgrades.
