Take note, microgrid developers and others working with efficient fossil fuel generation. The next deadline is April 30 to apply for loan guarantees under an $8 billion federal program.
The Department of Energy issued the solicitation late last year for what it calls advanced fossil fuel projects. The DOE is opening the funding to a range of technologies. One category, ‘Efficiency Improvements,’ includes microgrid, combined heat and power, waste heat recovery and distributed generation.
“Whether projects are developing fossil fuels more cleanly, constructing an advanced power plant that cuts carbon pollution, or building an efficient microgrid network that better utilizes fossil fuels, loan guarantees under this solicitation will support innovative fossil energy projects across the spectrum that reduce, avoid or sequester greenhouse gases,” said Peter Davidson, the executive director of the DOE’s Loan Programs Office.

Projects must show that they avoid, reduce or sequester carbon dioxide emissions and employ new or significantly improved fossil fuel technology.
The April 30 deadline is for a Phase I review of projects. The DOE will invite those that pass the Phase I threshold to undergo a Phase II competitive review for the loan guarantees.
If you can’t make the April 30 deadline, don’t worry. The DOE will continue to accept applications under a rolling deadline schedule through Jan. 2016. Additional Phase I application deadlines this year are July 31 and Dec. 5.
